Thrips invades some parts of Ratnagiri
Invasion of thrips on alphonso mangoes has been observed in some parts of Ratnagiri district. It has severely affected the economics of alphonso mango. The late harvest from 3rd flowering has been prominently affected. This will result in lower harvest in the month of May. As of now there are very few remedies for this infestation, resulting a sense of helplessness among the farmers.

Alphonso Season 2010
Now that the winter has been good, all the mango trees are in full bloom.
We expect a decent crop this year. We already have setup a 4 ton Natural Ripening Chamber in Pune. Patwardhan Ambewale has been the foremost retailer in supplying naturally ripened mangoes to all customers. We do not ripen mangoes with carbides and other harmful ripening chemicals like ethryl.
Early mangoes have already arrived in the market from farmers who have used cultar in their farms. We expect the season to begin in mid-March with regular arrivals.

Alphonso mango season delayed further
Alphonso mango season has been delayed further. We initially had expected that the season will be dealyed and regular arrivals would start from last week of March. But it seems that the season will be delayed further. The arrivals are only expected to go up from Gudhi Padwa onwards and the season in ture sense will begin only by 10th April onwards. The prices have taken a U turn and have gone up in the past week due to weak arrivals in the markets in Pune and Mumbai as also other parts of the country. The demand has risen now as the weather has turned hot and humid. The prices are not expected to soften anytime before 15th April .
The mango season from Ratnagiri and Devgad have proved to be unpredictable as usual.

Alphonso mango season delayed
I have been on a tour to Devgad on Thursday 28th February 2008.
The cold wave that gripped whole of India in February had affected the mango plantations in Ratnagiri and Devgad. Due to this the season has been delayed. There is the onset of second flowering and the fruits of this flowering are only expected at end of April 2008. There has been some instances of fruit drop due to the onset of second flowering in some places. Thus the arrivals are expected to be marginal in March 2008. The real season will be in April and May this year.

Alphonso Mangoes arrive in Pune and Mumbai
The first mangoes of the season 2008 have arrived in Pune and Mumbai market.
This time mangoes have arrived in Pune before 26th January. The first crate of mango was sold at a mind boggling price of Rs. 8000.00 (approx 200USD) for 4 dozen and the other crate of 6 doz fetched a price of Rs.10,100.00 (approx 250 USD).
Considering that these are the wholesale prices for raw mangoes the ripened mangoes at retail level could see a price of about Rs.2,500.00 ($63.00)per dozen. These are early arrivals and prices will come down once regular season starts. This year winter has set in early thus flowering was intiated early. Also due to favourable weather conditions till now the season is expected to be good this year.
